My DevOps Journey: Blending Storytelling with Technical Expertise
Being a guest on Adventures in DevOps in August 2021 was a professional highlight, giving me the rare opportunity to share my journey as an interviewee rather than an interviewer. One question stood out: What’s your DevOps story? Reflecting on it, I realized my career has been defined by connecting technical concepts with compelling narratives to drive understanding, adoption, and innovation.
From Documenting DevOps to Driving Adoption
My journey into DevOps began with content. As a technical writer supporting teams adopting DevOps for the first time, I documented the transformative shift from traditional waterfall methodologies. These experiences taught me that successful development processes are often unique to each organization, tailored to their specific needs and culture.
This perspective deepened when I joined the corporate growth group of a federal systems integrator (FSI). Here, I collaborated with solution architects to design and communicate solutions that brought commercial cloud practices, including DevOps and DevSecOps, to the public sector. My role required not only creating detailed technical content but also distilling complex ideas into accessible collateral that enabled decision-making and alignment among diverse stakeholders.
Insights from the Industry
While working at the FSI, I extended my expertise as a freelance writer for industry-leading platforms such as TechTarget. This side hustle gave me a unique vantage point on DevOps and cloud adoption trends across enterprises. Writing for these audiences sharpened my ability to analyze market conditions, anticipate adoption challenges, and frame narratives that resonate with both technical and business audiences.
Transitioning to Technical Marketing
This combination of content expertise and industry insight naturally led me to a role in technical marketing. At a container security startup, I worked to position the company as a thought leader in the DevOps space. My work spanned market research, content strategy, and creating materials that addressed DevOps adoption challenges in the Department of Defense (DoD) and the public sector. Through this role, I demonstrated the value of combining storytelling with technical depth to engage customers and influence decision-makers.
Why Work with Me?
